Meditation: There are dozens of meditative practices. Each requires the deliberate use of attention to focus and calm ones mind. Some things a person would generally focus their attention on may be symbols, sounds, colors, breath, uplifting thoughts, spiritual realms, etc. The goal of meditative practice is to strengthen a beings' ability to control, quiet and/or use their mind. Meditation is also practiced to extend spiritual growth, becoming more conscious, and strengthening our inner spirit. More recently, meditation has become a valuable tool for finding a peaceful oasis of relaxation and stress relief in a demanding, fast-paced world. Uses today may include healing, emotional cleansing and balancing, deepening concentration and insight, manifesting change, developing intuition, unlocking creativity, exploring higher realities, and finding inner guidance.
General guidelines for meditation including putting your expectations aside and not worrying about doing it correctly. There are infinite possibilities and no fixed criteria for meditation. A few things to avoid during meditation do include trying to force something to happen, over-analyzing the meditation, trying to make your mind blank or chase thoughts away, and putting too much emphasis on doing it correctly. It is not advisable to meditate on an empty stomach. You should find a quiet, comfortable place to meditate. The idea of sitting with both the legs folded is alright but it is certainly acceptable to have your legs in any position most comfortable to an individual's needs. Eliminate as much noise as possible. Sit comfortably and in a position where you feel control of your whole body with your hands in any comfortable manner.
A common misconception about meditation is that meditation is used to turn off your thoughts or make your mind blank. This is not true, inner calmness and quietness is achieved through meditation but no by turning off thoughts. Quieting the mind comes naturally from the effectiveness of the meditation method used and an uplifting of spiritual energy that is beyond your own efforts.
